## Five Things to Know After a Hail Storm

Read these before anyone knocks on your door.

1. Do not sign anything a door knocker hands you. It is a contingency agreement. They want to meet your adjuster to help point out hail damage, and if you do not hire them, they want 20% of the claim total. It is high pressure, and there is no dollar amount on it. If you have already signed something, do not let them meet the adjuster.
2. Take your time. You have six months or up to a year to get the work done after you file a claim. Storm chasers, the sales people and the crews, will not want to wait months, and they may be from out of state.
3. Check the truck. Some storm chasers get a mailbox at a postal annex, call it a suite, and get local phone numbers to look like they are from here. Walk out to their truck and look at the license plate and the registration sticker. Do the same with the crews. They are not coming back if you have a leak.
4. Never give a contractor money to start. Supply houses give us a 30 day float. A company worth its salt can handle that, and we need no money to start.
5. Get the mortgage company right. Make sure the adjuster has the correct mortgage company when they inspect. Most insurance checks list the mortgage company, so get it right the first time.

**How Long Do I Have After a Hail Storm?**
You have six months or up to a year to get the work done after you file a claim. If the work is not done in time, you lose the second payment, the recoverable depreciation. So take your time, but do not let it slide. Have us look first, then file.
